The Composite Score Formula, With Real Arithmetic
Because each section carries 50 composite points, the per-item values fall straight out of division. Each multiple-choice question is worth 50 ÷ 45 ≈ 1.111 composite points. Each free-response point is worth 50 ÷ 54 ≈ 0.926 composite points. Add the two halves and you have a composite out of 100.
Worked example. Suppose you answer 28 of 45 multiple-choice questions correctly and earn 30 of 54 free-response points. Your Section I contribution is 28 × 1.111 = 31.1. Your Section II contribution is 30 × 0.926 = 27.8. Composite = 31.1 + 27.8 = 58.9 out of 100. That clears our estimated threshold for a 5 (57) with about two points to spare — on roughly 62% of the multiple choice and 56% of the free response. That is not a typo. It is the BC curve.
You may have seen the old /108 chart circulating on forums, and it is worth knowing that it is the same formula wearing a different costume. That chart multiplies your MCQ count by 1.2 and adds your free-response points: 45 × 1.2 = 54 for Section I, plus 54 for Section II, equals 108 — a perfect 50/50 split. Run our example through it: 28 × 1.2 = 33.6, plus 30 = 63.6 out of 108, which is 58.9%. Identical answer. We simply express the result out of 100 so it is easier to compare across AP subjects.
- Count your correct multiple-choice answers out of 45. Wrong answers and blanks score the same — zero — because there is no guessing penalty.
- Multiply that count by 1.111 (50 ÷ 45) to get your Section I contribution out of 50.
- Add your free-response points across all six questions, out of 54, remembering that each question is worth 9.
- Multiply the free-response total by 0.926 (50 ÷ 54) to get your Section II contribution out of 50.
- Add the two halves. Then read the result against the estimated cutoffs: 57+ is a 5, 48–56 is a 4, 38–47 is a 3, and 32–37 is a 2.
