Easiest and hardest AP exams lists are everywhere, and almost every one of them ranks on a single number: the share of students who score a 3 or higher. That number is real and it is official — but it describes the students who sat the exam at least as much as it describes the exam. Below are the 21 AP exams we build score calculators for, ranked twice: once by pass rate, and once by the number almost nobody puts beside it — how much of the composite you actually have to earn for a 5.
How the easiest and hardest AP exams actually get ranked
Nearly every ranking of the easiest AP exams uses one statistic: the percentage of test-takers who earn a 3, 4 or 5, universally called the pass rate. It is the one hard, official number in this whole conversation. College Board publishes a score distribution for every exam, and a 3 is the score it labels qualified — the floor most colleges will even look at for credit. Plenty of selective schools want a 4 or a 5, and some grant nothing at all, which is why the table below carries the 5-rate next to the pass rate.
What those lists almost never give you is the other half of the picture: how forgiving the curve is. A pass rate tells you how a cohort did. The composite cutoff tells you how much margin for error the exam hands you. Those two things come apart constantly — AP Statistics has a middle-of-the-pack curve and the weakest pass rate of the 21 exams here, while AP Chemistry asks for a higher composite than Statistics does and still posts the second-strongest pass rate.
We rank only the 21 exams we have researched cutoffs for. That is a deliberate limit, not an oversight. We could pad this page out to every AP exam by lifting pass rates from other sites, but we would be republishing numbers we have not checked and pairing them with curve estimates that, for those exams, do not exist. A ranking is worth no more than the sourcing behind it.
The score distributions in this article are official — they are College Board's own published figures, the same ones each of our calculator pages cites. The composite cutoffs are not. College Board has never released an official raw-score-to-1–5 conversion for a live exam, and it re-equates every exam every year, so each cutoff here is a researched estimate built from released exams and reported curves. Treat them as planning numbers, not promises — and treat any site that calls a cutoff official as wrong.

College Board releases each year's distributions on a rolling basis through the summer as rounded whole percentages, then replaces them with complete official tables later. So the figures above are a mix: rows carrying a decimal (AP Biology's 18.9%, AP Computer Science A's 25.6%, AP Environmental Science's 12.6%) come from the last complete official year, while rows in round numbers come from the most recent preliminary release. Each calculator page states which year its own numbers are from. Practically, this means a gap of one or two points between two exams in this table is noise — a 74% and a 73% are the same result. Only the large gaps are worth acting on.
Why pass rate is a poor proxy for difficulty
Here is the problem with ranking the easiest and hardest AP exams by pass rate: nobody is assigned to an AP exam at random. Every distribution above is the output of a selection process that finished long before May — who enrolled, in which grade, after which prerequisites, with what background. A pass rate measures a cohort meeting an exam, and the cohort usually does more of the work.
Self-selection: Calculus BC's 82% is mostly about who shows up
AP Calculus BC is the headline case. Of the 21 exams here it has the highest pass rate at 82%, the highest 5-rate at 46%, and the most forgiving curve at roughly 57% of the composite for a 5. It is also, by content, strictly harder than AP Calculus AB: it covers everything AB covers plus series, parametrics, polar coordinates and more integration technique. Those facts are not in conflict. Students reach BC by clearing a maths sequence first, usually as juniors and seniors already committed to a STEM track. AB's 65% pass rate comes from a far broader group.
The BC curve is genuinely more generous — 57% for a 5 against 64% for AB, seven composite points of extra room — and that is a real, usable advantage. But it cannot explain a 17-point pass-rate gap on its own. The rest is the roster. The same caution applies to AP Physics C: E&M and AP Physics C: Mechanics, whose 58% and 60% cutoffs are the second and third most forgiving we track and whose cohorts are among the most selective in the program. A generous curve is not evidence of an easy exam; it is often evidence that the exam is hard enough to need one.
Cohort composition: Human Geography is often a ninth grader's first AP
AP Human Geography sits at a 66% pass rate, which lands it on plenty of hardest-AP-exam lists. Its content load is small. What it has is the youngest cohort in the program: it is the standard first AP at thousands of schools, taken in ninth grade by students who have never written an AP free-response answer or sat a multi-hour exam. The curve already reflects the exam's real demands — 68% of the composite for a 5 is the fifth most forgiving cutoff of the 21 — but the distribution reflects inexperience as much as difficulty. AP World History and AP Environmental Science pick up milder versions of the same effect for the same reason.
The AP Statistics anomaly: a mid-pack curve, the lowest pass rate we cover
AP Statistics is the cleanest proof that curve and cohort are separate questions. Its estimated cutoffs are unremarkable: about 71% of the composite for a 5 and 44% for a 3 — gentler than AP Chemistry's 73% and much gentler than AP Macroeconomics' 79%. Yet 60% of AP Statistics students score a 3 or higher, the lowest figure of the 21 exams here, and just 17% earn a 5.
The curve is not the culprit. AP Statistics has broad, open enrolment — it is frequently the maths AP taken precisely because it is not calculus, often as a standalone senior-year course rather than the end of a sequence. Its free response is also graded on justification in context, which punishes exactly the habit that cohort tends to bring: a student who computes the right interval but cannot say what it implies about the population loses most of the available points. Set that against AP Chemistry, which demands a higher composite for a 5 and still passes 78% of its students — the second-highest rate of the 21.
AP Computer Science A: an average that describes nobody
AP Computer Science A is the other distribution worth staring at. Its 67% pass rate looks mediocre while its 25.6% 5-rate is the second highest of the 21 exams here, behind only AP Calculus BC. Both are true at once because the distribution is bimodal: about a quarter of students earn a 5 and 22.0% earn a 1, with comparatively few in between. That is two populations in one room — students who had written code before the course, and students meeting Java for the first time. Averaging across them produces a number that describes neither, and a 78% cutoff for a 5 that the first group clears comfortably and the second rarely approaches.
What this ranking deliberately leaves out
Two families of AP exam are missing from the table, and both are missing for structural reasons rather than editorial ones. AP Seminar, AP Research and the Art and Design portfolios are scored from year-long portfolios and performance tasks rather than a multiple-choice section plus free response. There is no raw composite to convert, so they can appear in a pass-rate list but never in a curve ranking — and setting a year of supervised, revised, teacher-submitted work against one morning in May is not a comparison at all.
The world language exams are the other omission. Their published totals include students with substantial exposure to the language outside the classroom, which is precisely why College Board reports a separate standard group distribution for them. A headline pass rate that blends heritage speakers with classroom beginners is not a number a classroom beginner should plan around.
We quote no figures for those exams here, because we have not researched them to the standard we hold our own calculator pages to. If you ever see this post cited next to a 40-row league table of every AP exam, that table is not ours.
Which AP exams are genuinely self-studyable
Pass rates say nothing about whether you can learn a subject without the class, which is a different question with different criteria: is the content finite and self-contained, can you practise the exam skill against released material and mark yourself honestly, and is there a component you simply cannot produce alone? A tough curve does not disqualify a subject from self-study. It just means you need more raw accuracy — which is worth knowing in September rather than in May.
- AP Human Geography — a small, vocabulary-driven content base and the fifth most forgiving cutoff of the 21, about 68% of the composite for a 5.
- AP Psychology — self-contained and heavily memorisable, though its 75% cutoff leaves less slack than Human Geography, so drill released multiple choice.
- AP U.S. Government — a one-semester course at most schools, built on a finite list of foundational documents and required Supreme Court cases, and 24% of its students reach a 5.
- AP Environmental Science — broad but shallow, and its free response rewards clear structure more than technique.
- AP Microeconomics — one semester of graph-driven material, though budget for the 79% composite a 5 demands.
- AP Macroeconomics — the same shape as Micro, but check the numbers before you commit: it needs 57% of the composite just for a 3, the steepest 3 cutoff of the 21 after AP English Language and AP Computer Science Principles.
Exams that do not self-study well, however friendly the curve looks
The two AP Physics C exams have the second and third most generous cutoffs of the 21 and neither is a sensible solo project: they are calculus-based, and improvement comes from repeated problem sets with someone correcting your setup. AP Chemistry and AP Biology lean on experimental design and lab reasoning that is hard to simulate at a desk. AP English Language and AP English Literature need graded essays — you cannot mark your own rhetorical analysis reliably, and at 80% and 75% of the composite for a 5 there is little room to absorb your own generosity. AP Computer Science Principles requires a submitted performance task and asks 83% for a 5, the highest bar we track. And AP Calculus BC without AB behind you is a full year of content that a 57% cutoff will not rescue.
- Start from what you actually want to study next year, then look up its numbers — not the other way round. Interest predicts your score better than any distribution does.
- Compare like with like. Put AP Biology next to AP Chemistry, not next to a portfolio course. Setting a three-hour exam against a year of submitted work produces nonsense.
- Read the composite column as your margin for error. At AP Calculus BC's 57% you can drop more than 40% of the paper and still earn a 5; at AP Computer Science Principles' 83% you cannot.
- If you need a 4 or a 5 for credit, look at the 5-rate rather than the pass rate. AP English Language passes 74% of its students but only 13% of them earn a 5.
- Ignore differences of a point or two in the pass rate column. Those rows come from different release stages, and the gap is smaller than the ordinary year-to-year wobble.
- Check the credit policy at the colleges you are actually applying to before optimising for anything at all.
- Run a realistic raw score through the matching tool in our AP score calculators. A 5 you can plausibly reach beats a percentage in a table.
- You can name a reason for the course that has nothing to do with its pass rate.
- You have the prerequisites that the strong cohort inside that exam's distribution had.
- You have looked at the 5-rate, not only the share scoring 3 or higher.
- You know roughly how much of the composite a 5 needs — check it in the matching AP score calculator.
- Your target colleges grant credit for this exam at the score you realistically expect.
- You have checked for a lab, portfolio, speaking or performance-task component you cannot handle alone.
- The total load is one you can carry: four APs you finish beat six you abandon.
- You are treating every composite cutoff you have seen, including ours, as an estimate that moves each year.

Where these numbers come from
Every pass rate and 5-rate above is College Board's own published figure, cited on our calculator page for that exam and traceable to the per-exam tables under AP score distributions. As the note above says, they are not all from the same release stage, and we would rather flag that than quietly round everything into a tidy single-year league table.
The composite cutoffs are ours. They are built from released exams, the scoring guidelines published at AP Central, and reported curves — and they are estimates. College Board has never published an official raw-score-to-1–5 conversion for a live exam, and it re-equates every exam every year, so a boundary we place at 83 could sit a few points either side in a given administration. Real cutoffs typically move two to four composite points year to year. That is why every calculator on the site lets you change them.
One claim we cut while writing this: that AP Calculus BC has the most forgiving curve and the highest pass rate in AP. It has both among the 21 exams we cover, which is all the data we hold can support, and it is still a strong statement. Stretching it across the whole program would have meant publishing numbers we had not verified — the exact failure this post is arguing against.

What counts as a passing AP score?
A 3 or higher, though “passing” is not an official College Board term. College Board labels a 3 qualified, a 4 well qualified and a 5 extremely well qualified. Passing and earning credit are different things: many selective colleges require a 4 or a 5, some accept a 3 for placement rather than credit, and a few award nothing. Check the policy at the specific schools on your list before using a pass rate to plan.
Is AP Calculus BC really easier than AP Calculus AB?
Not in content — BC covers everything AB covers plus series, parametrics, polar coordinates and additional integration technique. BC's curve is genuinely more forgiving, at about 57% of the composite for a 5 versus 64% for AP Calculus AB, which is a real advantage.
